If this is your first time visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo and Mostar are natural places to start. Sarajevo mixes Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Yugoslav history within a remarkably compact city, while Mostar's Old Bridge and the emerald Neretva have become symbols of the country.
But a great Bosnia itinerary should leave room for detours. Travel north toward Jajce and Travnik, continue west to the waterfalls and clear water of Una National Park, or head south through Blagaj, Počitelj and Herzegovina toward the Mediterranean atmosphere of Trebinje.
